The Space Between Control
// Montana Moore
The Space Between Control has been slowly taking shape for over a year.
It started with lots of testing, changing my mind, going back over things and letting pieces evolve without knowing exactly where they were heading. Life was pretty full at the same time, and that naturally fed into the work too.
The collection is really about that push and pull between wanting to control everything and knowing when to let go.

The Space Between Control // Collection Notes
The Space Between Control explores the tension between holding on and letting go.
My work has always involved an element of uncertainty. I can begin with an idea, a colour or a direction, but the materials have their own behaviour. They move, settle, resist and change, and often the most interesting moments happen when I stop trying to control every outcome.
With this collection, I wanted to take that further.
Rather than working towards a fixed image from the beginning, I allowed the pieces to develop more instinctively. Decisions were made, undone and made again. Tests became paintings. Paintings changed direction. The collection evolved slowly over more than a year, alongside a period of life that felt full, changing and at times overwhelming.
That seeped into the work. The pieces became less about executing a plan and more about responding to the material, to instinct, and to whatever was happening around me. Some works returned to the studio again and again before they felt resolved. Others emerged through a single unexpected moment.
The collection became as much about trusting the process as it was about the finished works.
For me, The Space Between Control sits in that uncomfortable but necessary place between shaping something and allowing it to become what it needs to be. Between intention and instinct, certainty and uncertainty, control and trust.
